Van Gogh and the Colors of Night

Van Gogh and the Colors of Night
September 21, 2008 - Janaury 5th, 2009
Museum of Modern Art
11 West 53rd Street
New York, NY

Throughout his career, Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853- 1890) attempted the paradoxical task of representing night by light. His procedure followed the trend set by the Impressionists of "translating" visual light effects with various color combinations.

At the same time, this concern was grafted onto Van Gogh's desire to interweave the visual and the metaphorical in order to produce fresh and deeply original works of art. These different artistic concerns found themselves powerfully bound together in Van Gogh's nocturnal and twilight paintings and drawings. This exhibition will present new insight into Van Gogh's depictions of night landscapes, interior scenes, and the effects of both gaslight and natural light on their surroundings. Representing all periods of the artist's career, the exhibition will comprise over two dozen works of superlative quality-several of which have never been seen together, even though they were very clearly conceived with each other in mind. This exhibition will be shown at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, February 13-June 7, 2009. It will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

  • CUNY JANSSEN (The Netherlands)

It combines work by young, emerging artists with work by those who are more internationally renowned. Works by these artists have been exhibited previously at such major museums as the Victoria and Albert, London; the Stedelijk, Amsterdam; Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Jeu de Paume, Paris; Sprengel Museum, Hannover; and Museum Folkwang Essen. For several, this will be their premiere museum exhibition in the US.

Their images are very personal diaries of a place, exploring the evolving relationship between people and nature, rural and urban, old and new, timelessness and change, natural and artificial. It is the balance between these contrasts that lends these bodies of work a highly contemplative feel. The format of the exhibition will constitute a series of narratives or extended essays by each artist, which resonate and connect with one another. Singular characteristics in certain of these individual pictures, as well as obscure connections between contrastive identities and disjunctive moments, engender a sense of surprise and discovery. For example, Cuny Jansen travels to Amami-Oshima Island, Japan, to produce beautifully printed portraits of young people seen against a virgin landscape, encouraging an optimistic reading of the enduring truths of survival and beauty. John Riddy juxtaposes the natural beauty of Mount Fuji against the indications of an urbanized modern Japanese town. Clare Richardson is drawn to an area of Transylvania through her interest in farming and the mythic potential of unspoiled nature, in particular the narratives and folklore associated with the forest. Rineke Dijkstra presents portraits of schoolchildren and adolescents in city parks in Europe, China, and the US, positioning her subjects in almost Eden-like surroundings, looking back to the tradition of landscape painting. Joel Sternfeld's photographs are grand and epic in scope, recording a New England landscape at different times of the year and depicting the painterly and expressive changes of the seasons from the lush verdant green of springtime to the snowy expanses of winter. An-My Le explores a quarry along the Hudson River in New York where trap rock has been mined for over a century, returning repeatedly and choosing a range of times of day and weather conditions to record the site and its activities. Yto Barrada brings together a series of photographs to examine the static and transitory life of Tangier, Morocco ñ the border cit 13 km from Europe across the Strait of Gibraltar -- at once symbolic, physical, historical and intimately personal.

Lisa van Noorden - Lucky Unlucky

Lisa van Noorden - Lucky Unlucky
November 6th, 2008 - January 10th, 2009
Umbrage Editions
111 Front Street, Suite 208
Brooklyn, NY

Lucky Unlucky is an art project by Dutch artist Lisa van Noorden. In 2005 the artist travelled to Dubai and became intrigued by two child soldier souveniers she brought home. She then started a new series of artworks with 'innocence lost' as the main theme.

The theme of innocence had emerged in her work earlier; Innocence lost (as in her sensitive drawings of child soldiers), innocence raped (as in her delicate series on child brides), innocence fronzen (as in her skilful paintings of doll's faces). By integrating the child soldier theme into the visual arts, as opposed to the exploitation via media and television that only deaden and de-sensitize the viewer to the reality, Lisa van Noorden brings about a far more direct and personal impact. By carrying out the theme in drawings, paintings and in the unusual form of accessible, cuddly dolls (the so-called 'Lucky' and 'Unlucky' dolls) harsh reality is brought from the public sphere into the private. There 24 dolls from 24 countries, each based on stories of real child soldiers (some as young as 3 years old). The dolls are paired - Lucky and Unlucky - the former, ordinary child from the first world, the latter, a conscripted soldier. The paired characters have their own stories, but there is always one identical sentence within these stories. 'Unlucky' hildren deal with terror and horror in the quotidian. The 'Lucky' children, who do not live in outwardly horrific circumstances, nevertheless have their tiny, very real everyday problems, like wearing an itchy and smelly Star Wars suit, nursing a sick pet, or forgetting a night lamp at summer camp. By displaying the Lucky and Unlucky dolls next to each other, the contrast between them is reinforced and painfully clear. The audience is left to consider the two faces of childhood realities simultaneously happening around the globe.

Since their origin over 8,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt, tiles have served not only a practical function in private and public spaces throughout the world, but they have also been one of the most enduring markers of cultural history. Tiles are both democratic and accessible. They are the essence of what public art has the potential to be-an art form that can be found anywhere in the world by anyone, no matter one's class, race, age or gender; with a purpose and beauty transcending all differences between all people.

The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art's Public Tile Project incorporates individual tiles/artworks created by Peekskill Central School District students as well as students from some 30 districts along the Hudson River and Hudson Valley area, and in collaboration with regional artists, into the city's streets and sidewalks. These art works will act as enduring symbols of cooperation, innovation and civic respect. The project will foster viable and non-threatening means to unite all segments of the city as a result of the project's engagement of a broad and varied ethnic, cultural, social and political mix of artists, students and audiences. Each student will be encouraged to design a tile reflecting his/her own artistic, cultural, geographic, social and political heritage and connect that heritage to the history of Peekskill, a history steeped in Dutch roots and built on the political and cultural mores that were emplanted by the early Dutch Settlement on the area.

Museum of Modern Art
11 West 53rd Street
New York, NY

This exhibition of the work of the acclaimed painter Marlene Dumas, the first of its scale to be mounted in the United States, is organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in association with The Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition includes approximately seventy paintings and thirty-five drawings, providing a comprehensive examination of the work of one of the most thought-provoking and fascinating artists working today.

The exhibition opens with Dumas's earliest mature works from the late 1970s. While loosely chronological, it will also reflect Dumas's tendency to work in series, with key paintings grouped together. Through her focus on the human figure, Dumas merges themes of race, sexuality, and social identity with personal experience and art-historical antecedents to create a unique perspective on important and controversial issues of the day. The exhibition provides an opportunity to trace these themes over the course of the artist's career, and also provides access to paintings and drawings of extraordinary technical quality. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.
